5,0 sur 5 étoiles Great story!
Oh Task. I missed you, you giant stony pile of fun!
This is a story that takes place in Task’s early life, while he is still with his creator and his brothers and sisters. They are more or less chasing an army into a fortress that is rather famous for never having been forcefully taken, but the army retreating there has a magic user to break in.
Well, the army chasing them has a bunch of golems to throw at it, so there!
This story is short enough that I read it in about an hour and a half, which is more novella-length for me, but that said, I still managed to highlight 4 passages in it, one of which was like the first line of it, reminding me that I really do love Ben Galley’s writing.
And also… I’m not going to say that I liked this one better than The Heart of Stone, because that’s not precisely true, but this one was short and sweet, didn’t spare the f-bombs (yes, I noticed! :D), and was quite immersive and hard to put down.
Seeing Task in his early life, and seeing that he was always… a bit different than other golems. Seeing how he is compared to his siblings, and just getting a look at what other golems made by Belerod are like was interesting as well.
There’s also a bit of a sequence where we go back to the timeframe in which The Heart of Stone takes place, and that was a neat little segue into the conclusion.
All told, I really, really liked it. There’s also a line that, to me, seems to indicate that The Heart of Stone and the Emaneska series take place in the same world… and that’s interesting. I did not know that. Either way, I’m definitely hoping to get on that sooner than later. Well worth the price!

5,0 sur 5 étoiles A fast-paced, excellent war story, and more of the stone golem with a heart.
Task is a golem, created for war, sent into battle after battle alongside his kin in a grinding, country-wide fight that is slowly being won. And now his creator and master pits them against one last fortress, one last enemy, one last battle...
But Task is learning - slowly - that he may not be as his kin are; he does not glory in the rage, revel in the slaughter. And as they face the walls of the unbreakable keep and the last, powerful wizard who stands inside it, it may be that this difference is Task's strength.
If you enjoyed Heart of Stone, you'll love this - more Task! If you haven't read Heart of Stone, this short story is enough of a stand-along to read before you read the main novel - and it's worth a read!

5,0 sur 5 étoiles Gruesomely Great Golem Fun
I really enjoyed this one. Ben Galley seems to have the ability to bring characters to life with very little effort, and that allows them to take over the story to where I didn't really feel like I was reading it at times but watching the scenes play out in my head of their own accord.
Task is our main character here, a golem constructed by a sorcerer to lead his army in an ongoing war. Task has many siblings, all very different (rock material, size, shape), and all clearly described and fun to learn about.
And the fights, the fights are gruesomely imagined and really stuck in my head -- at one point Task uses a man as a weapon to mow down other enemies until said man tears apart to the point of uselessness, and then there's lots of head-rolling and body-rending...ahhh I loved it!
The only slightly negative thing I can say is there's a handful of areas that were missed during editing, just like duplicate words and the like, nothing that gets in the way of enjoyment. I still give it a solid 5/5.
