The past is never over ...

Jack Stewart thought he'd put the past behind him. On the surface, he has everything - success, money, a big house and he is never short of an attractive woman by his side, but a tragic road accident shatters his world.

Raised as an Irish Traveller, Luke Kiernan hasn't had it easy, and when he wakes in a Dublin hospital to find the man he's hated since childhood at his bedside, he's hungry for revenge.

Two very different worlds collide, bringing new dangers, exposing past deceits, and unearthing dark family secrets buried long ago. But from tragedy springs the promise of a fresh start with two women who are intent on helping Jack and Luke mend their lives.

Can new love heal old wounds, or are some scars there for good?

Review

This is a compelling, fast-paced read with a plot that builds inexorably. The characters are finely drawn and the writers, despite the fact that neither are Irish, manage to weave Irish Traveller culture throughout the fabric of the book.

They manage to authentically capture an atmosphere of suspicion between the Traveller community and the rest of society. They also beautifully convey the emotional stiflement among characters haunted by the spell of the past. -Irish Independent Newspaper, August 2013

>This is Isabella Connor's first book and I hope it won t be the last because I eagerly await the next story.

If you're looking for a great book to finish out your summer reading, I recommend this one to you!-Long & Short Reviews, September 2013

This really is an excellent story. Combining the world and tradition of the Travelling people with the upper-class snobbery of the English Stewart family and adding in a mix of supporting characters. The plot gathers pace, starting slowly, introducing the characters and building to an ending that I really didn't predict. 5 stars!

Isabella Connor is the pseudonym for two internet buddies who have never physically met, and who live on different continents - one in North America, the other in Europe.

Val O is a teacher, and Liv T an NHS worker.

Beneath an Irish Sky was the first of a planned quartet of novels set in the same area, but stand-alone stories. However, at the publisher's request, An Irish Promise's location was moved from Cheshire to Ireland, and the title was changed from 'A Winter Promise' - An Irish Promise owes its name to the Claddagh, which plays a major part in the story.

Beneath an Irish Sky is a family drama with some romance thrown in. When a father and his 20yr old son meet for the first time the relationship is strained, to say the least, but they share a joint wish - to learn the truth about the past.

An Irish Promise is the story of a bullied school girl and the effect it has not only on the girl and her family, but also on the bullies themselves. It asks the question, can revenge ever be the answer.

Jack Stewart's life is about to get turned upside down following a phone call from Dublin telling him that someone he once loved has been killed in a road accident. But what he thought would be a quick trip to Dublin turns out to be a little more complicated than that as he discovers that she had kept a secret from him.

Luke wakes up in hospital alone to the discovery that his mother has died but it's clear that there's more troubling him than just his injuries from the crash. What is his story and what is his connection to Jack?

I really liked the fact that there were two lead characters that were both male coming from different backgrounds which made for fascinating back stories. And even though we never get to meet Annie in person, she's very much an integral part of this story linking both Jack, Luke and their families.

From the very first chapter after Jack receives the phone call I was immediately hooked and a lot of questions were buzzing round my head wondering why Annie had left Jack in the first place, where has she been all these years, and why had she kept such an important secret from him? All the answers and some even more shocking secrets were uncovered over the 8 hour period I spent today reading this book, I just couldn't put it down!

The characters really came alive to me, and although you know (or hope) there will be a happy ending, the writing really helps to give you so much empathy from them all, as each fights their own issues and discovers the truths hidden from them all for so long. This is the first time I've tried Isabella Connor, or indeed any novel published by Choc Lit. I was fascinated when I discovered, at the very end, that Isabella Connor is the pen name of a writing partnership - and that the two authors have never met in the flesh. Not that it matters to the story, but whoever said that internet friendships aren't 'real' has certainly missed the point in this case.

The story begins with rich business man Jack Stewart's shock when the wife who deserted him years before is killed in a road accident. That's just the start of this absorbing novel which features two love affairs plus strong links with Ireland and rural England.

The story drew me in, little by little. The writing is tight and the author's knowledge of Ireland, English country life and the traveller culture which is an essential part of the story seemed to me to be faultless.

This was a book that delivered more than it promised, with many twists and turns plus a sweet happy ending.

Recommended for those who like a love story but enjoy a twisty mystery and a well-depicted back story.

I downloaded this book on impulse, but once started I could not put it down until I had finished it, and the previous plans I had had for the weekend were wiped out! The story commences with Jack Stewart going to identify the body of his 20 years estranged wife who had been killed in a road accident, and at the same time he discovers that he had been named on her 20 year old son's birth certificate as the father. Disbelieving, he meets the lad, who was also involved in the accident. From here the story involves mystery, love, hate and treachery, twists and turns together with humour and a touch of Irishness, which I like.

I downloaded the book for free, and by the time I had recommended it to my husband the price had gone up to £1.99. However, it is such a good story I do believe that if I had paid full price for it I would not have felt cheated. I found it very well written, and the story carries you along with no annoying editing faults. Great stuff, I really enjoyed it.

Beneath An Irish Sky by Isabella Connor is a fast-moving engaging tale which grabs you from the first page. The mix of eclectic characters have depth and by the end of the book some of them feel like old friends. There’s mystery, romance, prejudice and family conflicts all dealt with sensitivity. This is a thoroughly good read and would make a great TV drama.

The story was interesting and quite easy to read. What irked me was that having taken the pen-name of Connor there were some inconsistencies that stood out regarding the Irish parts of the story.
In Ireland it is An Garda Síochána and not Police and the Officers are know as Guards, or Gardaí. In parts of the story the correct words were used but not in all parts.
In the latter part of the story, when Jack Stewart got the ferry back to Dublin I could not understand why he would then go to Dublin airport and fly to Galway to hire a car and drive to Ennis - the book was written in 2013 and the M7 motorway, which runs from Dublin to Limerick, was open and by continuing on it leads on to Ennis - so it would have been better to hire a car in Dublin and drive down from there.
Have to say, though, the discovery about the rape and perpetrator at the end was a surprise but the final part of the story was a little rushed to bring about something of a "happy ending".

Not my usual kind of reading but I enjoyed reading this story from the outset. I found the story believable and thought provoking. Not so much a romance as a human interest story. The woman not good enough to marry the aristocrat's son and heir. The payoff, the lies, deceit and machinations were all unfortunately human failings. The book kept me wanting to read more - and I'm glad I did. One of our daughters is now reading the book and enjoying the story line and intrigue.

This is an exceedingly complicated book about human relationships and the author has done a very good job. I felt she could have given Annie and Luke a little more happiness, a little bit together. Also it is difficult to imagine someone holding on for so long without trying to find answers . But humans are complicated and probably often with so many insecurities. This story searches them well. I enjoyed reading it
