- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2017Drew has a difficult time at school. She's being bullied and there's always a terrible threat looming over her, while the last thing she wants is being the center of attention in a negative way. Drew's brother Mason is acting out because of the disappearance of their father. He's expelled from school and this lands him in a residential reform academy. When Drew receives an alarming message from one of his doctors she tries to make their mother see sense and reports it to the police, but when nobody is making any effort to get her brother out she only sees one solution, she has to go in herself. Drew has an escape plan, but will it work and will she be able to rescue her brother or has she made the ultimate sacrifice in vain?
The Treatment is a fantastic story that kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. Drew is brave, she can stand up for herself, she's resourceful and she's smart. I loved her personality. She knows who she can trust and who she should stay away from. When she finds out what is being done to the students of the reform school she doesn't hesitate and will do anything to rescue her brother, even when that means facing her worst fears. She's a true heroine with an admirable personality and I loved reading about her adventures.
C.L. Taylor has an amazing gripping writing style. The Treatment is so nerve wracking that I forgot about the time, didn't notice what happened around me and kept having to remind myself to stop holding my breath. I really loved this terrific story set in the near future. The reform school is fabulously creepy and finding out more about the procedures that are being used made me fly through the pages. I loved the world building in combination with the psychological experiments, everything is exactly right and connects in a brilliant way. The Treatment is a great thought-provoking must-read with plenty of surprising twists and turns and a mesmerizing ending.

I am a big fan of this author so, even though I have seen young adulthood for too many years to count, I didn't hesitate when the chance to read this was given to me. Indeed, my thanks must go to the Publisher and Netgalley for this chance.
So, the star of our book is 16 yo Drew Finch. She lives with her mum and stepdad, her dad having died. Her brother, Mason, is currently in a residential reform academy as he was too disruptive for her folks to handle. One day, a stranger passes her a message from Mason saying that all is not as it should be at the academy and that the "help" they are "offering" is somewhat sinister. Her interest is piqued but she is dubious. Until that, is when the stranger is subsequently killed in an "accident". Coincidence? Or is there really something sinister going on? Drew starts to investigate the academy but, on the surface, can see no wrong. Digging deeper however, she starts to uncover certain facts, backed up by a meeting with a contact she finds online. She now firmly believes that all is not what it seems at the academy. Failing in her endeavour to get her parents on board, she does the only thing left available; infiltration from within. Can she get to the bottom of things and expose the truth? And if so, will she be in time to save Mason, and at what cost?
Firstly, I must say that I have read more than my fair share of YA books even though I am well out of their target age-range. If the characters are good and the story is interesting I really don't think this matters and I would have missed out on some cracking reads had I excluded myself from this selection. Indeed, I find it a great way of dipping my toe into new genres as I find that they tend to ease me in gently. This genre however I am very familiar with so it was quite interesting to see what Ms Taylor would present me with. And I have to say that I enjoyed it very much.
I warmed to Drew pretty much from the off. I sympathised and indeed empathised with her own struggles to fit in at school and how she was endeavouring to make her transition into adulthood, balancing conformation with retaining her own identity and individuality. Which, lets face it, is pretty much the whole message the book left me with at the end. But I get ahead...
Other characters weren't quite so good for me. Some of their interactions left me a little dry but I am not sure if that is due to my age and corresponding distance from what the youth of today thinks and does so I let those feelings go. Easy to do as the story being told was enough to keep me going.
The story itself was very well plotted. It included all the requisite twists and turns, secrets and lies expected of the genre but delivered in a slightly easier way to follow. It would definitely suit adult readers new to the genre for this alone. But at the same time it was gritty enough to keep me on my toes, guessing throughout. Even I, a hardened reader of this sort of book, didn't have it all worked out ahead of the reveals. It had me turning the pages like a mad thing and I pretty much read from start to finish in only as many sittings as life allowed me with every break I was forced to make leaving me hankering to get back to it.
The ending left me with plenty to think about. I can see pros and cons with quite a bit of what was happening. Obviously some of the things that were described were completely over the top and definitely morally and socially unacceptable but, on the other hand, for the extreme cases, maybe a toned down, more safely delivered option... who knows? Definitely a good book for discussion both by old and young adults. Indeed discussion between them could also prove interesting.
All in all a good solid read that kept my attention throughout and left me satisfied at the end. What more could I ask for?

5.0 out of 5 stars Chilling!
I grabbed this book when it was cheap at the beginning of the year, not realising it was one of the author’s Young Adult fiction books. This wasn’t a problem, though, as everything Cally Taylor writes is utterly fantastic, gripping, and a guaranteed good read. This is no exception.
I think the storyline was perfectly fitting for teenagers. Had it been adults in the same situation, it wouldn’t have had the gravity nor been as thrilling. Teenagers, especially when already troublesome, are easily ignored when they make a claim such as the one in the blurb: “You have to help me. We’re not being reformed. We’re being brainwashed.” It is construed as another act for attention, making the reality of their situation that more chilling.
When Drew receives this message from her brother, who is at a reform school, she has to take matters into her own hands when neither her parents nor the authorities believe her. She finds a way to help her brother and is determined to do so, even if that costs her sanity and freedom.
The book is very well written; the characters are all very different and exciting. Every one of them that you meet you want the best for. It is all narrated from Drew’s point of view; there are no dual aspects or time lapses making this an effortless and straightforward read. There are plenty of shocks and hold your breath moments. I felt like I had to keep looking over my shoulder, making sure no one was there to cart me off. It gave you the perfect amount of anxiety that you want from this kind of story.
The ending was very fitting to the book, although it did seem a little rushed. The events that happen at the end are over only a few pages, and then we are a few weeks later getting a summary of what happened as a consequence. I’m not sure if I wanted more or just to feel like I was in the moment for a little longer as it did feel like a very sudden ending.
Overall, however, this is a brilliant read. If you’re not used to Young Adult fiction or are put off by that genre, don’t let that be why you don’t read this book. It is the author’s usual high quality of writing and is developed very well. Other than the characters being teenagers, this doesn’t feel like anything other than a Psychological Thriller.

4.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant step into the YA world
s a fan of C.L. Taylors other books ( The Missing, The Accident, The Lie) this book, The Treatment instantly went on my to read list. Then I found out it had been reduced to 99p on Amazon and it went straight to the top!
The Treatment is the story of Drew Finch, whose brother is at a reform school, she doesnt get on with her stepfather, and is bullied at school. Unlike everyone around her Drew refuses to accept her real dad committed suicide when she was younger. Whilst trying to evade bullies Drew is pulled into an alley and suddenly everything changes.
The Treatment: the gripping twist-filled YA thriller from the million copy Sunday Times bestselling author of The Escape by [Taylor, C.L.]
Warning: Contains Spoilers
Drew is shipped off to the same reform school her brother, Mason is at. Shes knows something isnt right, and the ‘robot like’ students that have been treated cause her further concern. Whilst finding a friend in Mouse she also learns that theres a bully everywhere (Jude) and the new boy Israel is trouble! Jude finds that misbehaving can be effective, that her research and interest in psychology is valuable, and sometimes real friends are as good as online friends.
The book is fast paced and well written. We learn a lot about Jude and just a little about the other characters, but that doesn’t matter; we know basic personality traits and that’s all the story really needs. Theres an interesting nod to historical brainwashing processes and the power the government would easily benefit from whilst having unwavering ‘trust’ in the control of their soldiers. Set a few years in the future it has a current but almost dystopian feel to secret projects in the UK which would sit well in the US aswell.
