Sandpaper Kiss Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 9 ratings

Investigative journalist Mark Jenner has travelled the world reporting from warzones, uncovering atrocities, and tracking violent civil unrest in his lifelong quest for the truth.

Now, the intrepid reporter finds himself journeying to a lab deep in the jungle, where the military has just moved in to curtail a mad scientist's experiments.

If the rumours are to be believed, Dr Conrad Faulkner has been playing God: performing horrifying genetic experiments not only on the jungle’s wildlife, but on its most vulnerable native tribes. Now, following the man's arrest, it's down to ordinary people to decide whether the subjects of those experiments will live or die.

The pressure Mark will face to spin the story in a way that benefits both of his brothers, a politician and a priest, is to be expected — the deep bond he forms with one of the experimental subjects is not.

As the lines are blurred between animal and human, genius and madness, Mark will discover more in the jungle than he could ever have predicted.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unusual and exciting - buy it now!

It took me a little while to get into this book - it skips about from present to past quite a bit and it wasn't always clear to me that these were flashbacks. It felt like a series of sections had been put together in not quite the right order. Still, that meant that I was desperate to find out what happened next at one of the cliffhanger-y bits, making it a huge page turner.

I'm not one of those people who likes to guess what will happen at the end, then smugly say "I knew that would be the case". I like to have it unfold and to be surprised. I defy anyone to guess some of the twists in advance - it was real gasp-worthy stuff!

I have two minor criticisms of the book. One, that there were a few typos or numbers where there should have been words. Two - there wasn't enough of it! I'm not sure if a sequel could be written, but I'd love to be one of the first to read it, if there were.

4.0 out of 5 stars Twists and turns, and the unexpected in this adventure
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 3, 2015
Yet another enjoyable, and very original story from Angel Wedge. I really liked the switching points of view and skips in time, which fitted well with narrator/ main character's journalistic style, and adds to the sense of mystery & exploration. The reader is taken along on a jungle adventure of scientific discovery, ethical dilemmas, and political intrigue, with cliff hangers at every turn. The ending was unexpected, but satisfying (with potential for a sequel?).

I like this book a lot. The story is intriguing, the characters compelling, and the descriptions of scenery consistently lush. I did feel like the plot took a while to take off, and disliked how some numbers were written as digits instead of words, hence only four stars. The suspense and mystery was worth the wait, however, as is the author's attention to detail.

    Would recommend!

Took a little while to get going, but once it did it trotted along nicely. Overall it was a very engaging read and I would heartily recommend it.
