Chasing Filthy Lucre (New Eden Series: Rexall Cycle Book 1) Kindle Edition

3.9 3.9 out of 5 stars 21 ratings

A former cop and former soldier, Weber Rexall has spent his life taking orders. After a failed political power grab leaves New Eden with no government but plenty of crumbling buildings, out-of-work drifters, and strung out data addicts, Rexall is on his own. Whether it's throwing fights in a basement fight club or doing security work for a friend, he'll take whatever job he can. When one of those security jobs goes violently wrong, Rexall finds himself in the middle of a fight with a rising corporate power that he never asked to be a part of.

"Chasing Filthy Lucre is a fast-paced, engaging look at an all too realistic possible future in which the rule of law has been replaced by the rule of the urban jungle. A little dystopian, a little cyberpunk, a little noir, Chasing Filthy Lucre is entirely thrilling."

About the Author

Hi. I'm Jarrett, and I'm a writer. By day I use my words for marketing. By night I use them for fiction. It's mostly genre fiction - crime with a touch of sci fi. And it's mostly books, typically short. This writing thing has been a dream since I was young. Some dreams from those years died. Some died very hard. I'm not, and likely will never be, the third baseman for the Kansas City Royals. But some dreams, like writing, never went away. It took me marrying a very special lady to really take a run at making this writing dream a reality. So if you like what I do, you have her to thank. If you don't like it there's only me to blame.

Jarrett Rush lives outside of Dallas with his wife, Gina, and their overly energetic chocolate Labrador, Molly. When not chasing the dog around the back yard, Jarrett likes to write stories about common people put in uncommon situations. He tends toward darker stories, so those uncommon situations usually involve guns and explosions. They may also include a science fiction element.

He started writing as a kid, but didn't pursue his dreams until he met Gina. She gave him the push that he needed to make those dreams a reality.

When he's not writing, Jarrett cheers on the Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers and lives out his own baseball dreams by playing rec-league softball.

Set in a future in which economic chaos has ensued, Chasing Filthy Lucre offers readers a gritty look of what may be one day. Weber Rexall is a freelance security worker, and when a job he takes goes terribly wrong, he is thrust deep into a conspiracy to overthrow the powers that be. Rexall's friend Berger is a reluctant companion as the two men brave the seedy underworld of New Eden for a chance of changing the future. Do they have it in them to follow through and impact the future? Or do they simply need to chase filthy lucre and look out for themselves?

I've seen the words dystopian, cyberpunk, and noir tossed around to describe Rush's Chasing Filthy Lucre. I believe all of those terms accurately describe the story. It's a fast-paced, gritty novella that grabs the reader's attention from the opening scene of an underground fight club. Chasing Filthy Lucre is the first book in an ongoing series, and I can't wait to read more from the mind of Jarrett Rush. Keep an eye on Rush; I expect good things from him.

There is only one class in the community that thinks more about money than the rich, and that is the poor. The poor can think of nothing else. ~Oscar Wilde

Somehow the youth movement was elected to run things and the old government fell apart. RomaCorp then becomes the supplier of everything, but in order to get these goods you must have cash. Weber Rexell is always after the all mighty dollar, no matter what the job entails. Hence when the stuff hits the fan as he is working one such job, he takes on another opportunity as a data runner for the "greater good". He is not alone in this task and if it is successful it will change the lives of everyone. That is just a small look into the world that Jarrett has made. Want to see more, then get the book...

I found this action packed book a fantastic futuristic story. It is just a tease into the future Jarrett has created. The story is short, but the story line with in it is huge. The reader will be so engrossed with the events, that before they know it, they have reached the ending. Oh what an ending. It leads one to try and wait patiently for the next in the series to come out. (Hint, hint Mr. Rush). Written in a no nonsense voice with no long wind descriptions and explanations. Just a note: the concept of being "plugged in" takes on a whole new meaning and not what we know it to mean.

Reads quick and not only because it's a novella. Jarrett Rush's cyberpunk is simply painted and easy to digest. His tech is fun and familiar, he doesn't need to beat the details into pulp because he's not striking material far from expectation. It's a "post-society" society - we all have images of what that means and Chasing Filthy Lucre is a very comfortable fit into that glove. Action is plentiful and well paced, the obligatory violence is effective and not gratuitous. Jarrett knows how to paint a fun fight scene. Wish it were longer and some of the plot jumps could use a touch more body, but the first person presentation helps to smooth over any speed bumps and the reader can race through a satisfying ride to the finish.

What a breath of fresh air! I've have not read anything like this before. This book is a well written introduction to interesting, mysterious, and gutsy characters that keep you guessing from beginning to end. With quick story pacing and non-stop action, it is an unforgettable depiction of a gritty future that desperately depends on self and survival on a Sci-Fi level.

I eagerly anticipate discovering what will happen to these fictional, yet life-like characters. I know that this is only the beginning for the dominant character, Rexall, and his peers. There is absolutely more background to discover, questions to be answered, and challenges to overcome. This book did not leave me hanging in a useless wonder; it left me purposely awaiting Mr. Rush's next book.

What a great price for this book! There's no real reason not to at least take a peek!

Chasing Filthy Lucre is a cyberpunk tale in the tradition of high tech, low life. But the tone is faithful to cyberpunk's noir roots, more than its scifi roots, giving it a real edge to it. Kind of a rusted, chipped, brutal edge. Sure, if you like Gibson and Dick, you'll like this. But probably even more so if you like James Cain and Richard Stark. The tension and desperation is that real.

I hope that, like the description says, Chasing Filthy Lucre is just the start, because I'm imagining that as Rush starts to develop his world, the work is just going to get better.

It felt like a fresh take in the science fiction genre from the start. Kinda fizzled out a bit, but I would definitely read any continuation on the series.

I've been reading a number of these indie books lately and this is the first one I really liked. I found it easy to picture the characters and places in the story. Too many of the indie books either don't give enough to picture the people and places or spend so much time on it the plot is submerged. This one was just right.

The plot and theme worked well with the way the main character was written. The chase for cash vs. idealism was well handled. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series!

This was an intriguing book to read. It dealt with some of my favorite topics - money (lucre); temptation; and, calm/oblivion (on the wire). The two main characters are interesting and fairly well-developed. The ending was abrupt to me - not like a cliffhanger, but rushed. I am glad to see there is a second book and plan to read it soon.

Ok, so firstly this is a short story, not a novel - 94 pages end-to-end, so if you're looking for a meaty crime thriller to sink your teeth into, like I was, you'll be a little disappointed. Because it's short, it's lacking detail in much of the descriptions and the story doesn't slowly build like i'm used to from this genre; just read the first two Richard Morgan books (from the Takeshi Kovacs series) which are detail-heavy and great at sculpting a universe for you to immerse yourself in.

Having said that, it's fast-moving and has some great, original sci-fi ideas that'll keep your interest and an intriguing protagonist. Follow-up stories are in the pipeline and Rush seems like a good bloke.
